Join us to experience a mind-boggling number of migrating hawks in an incredible country rich in biodiversity! Carlos is in high demand as he is well known for his expertise, his great personality and enthusiasm for the wildlife of Panama. We are thrilled to have our good friend Carlos Bethancourt as our local guide for this tour. Our days will feature exciting bird-filled trips to the best birding sites all designed to find as many of the area’s specialties as possible! We will also explore the foothills and cloud forests of El Valle de Anton - the home of motmots, tanagers, hummingbirds, antpittas and the mythical Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoo and the award-winning Canopy Lodge for four nights. We’ll also visit Panama’s premier birding site, the Pipeline Road, as well as Summit Ponds and Old Gamboa Road, the Panama Rainforest Discovery Center and its remarkable observation tower, the marshy Ammo Ponds, Old Gamboa Road and the Chagras River. From our base of operations at the Canopy Tower, we can witness the raptor migration over the tower from “Semaphore Hill Hawkwatch” an official count site for the Hawk Migration Association of North America (HMANA), as well as Metropolitan Nature Park and Ancon Hill, where millions of migrating raptors pass every fall. Our tour spends five nights at the world-famous Canopy Tower, located atop Semaphore Hill in the rainforests of Soberanía National Park. This amazing hawk migration spectacle will be the centerpiece of our tour with the Observation Deck of the Canopy Tower as the perfect vantage point to witness this raptor bonanza! In late autumn, hundreds of thousands of raptors funnel through the narrow isthmus of Panama toward their wintering grounds in South America. We are country peeps so don't mind a bush camp kitchen and rustic showers and long drop toilets.Join Gina Nichol, Steve Bird and Carlos Bethancourt for a birding adventure of a lifetime to witness one of the world’s greatest hawk migration phenomena. We did have our own toilet in the van so I used that one mainly. For me it was a bonus so very grateful to have hot running water. I did wear thongs in here and took my own rubber mat and camp light. There is a rustic shower with nice pressure and hot water. This was a great base for us as we have a dog and was limited to where we could go. The sunrise was beautiful and only a short walk the a small beach. I'm not a fan of steep hills so I was a bit nervous going down the steep hill. It had been raining so the track down to the camp was a bit muddy. Very kind and generous with her time and stories. Loved our caravan camping experience at Semaphore Farm.Ĭommunication was excellent and was easy to find. You might even see our resident Wedgetail Eagle!ĭog-friendly (must be under control/on a lead/contained). Plenty of wildlife to see at night and birds during the day. Launch your boat nearby to access good fishing or fish for squid off the Port Arthur jetty. Longer walks including the Three Capes tracks are easily accessible. The Port Arthur Historic site and a safe swimming beach are within walking distance with Safety Cove and Remarkable Cave only a 5-minute drive away. Firewood is included (donations welcomed). The campsite has spring water on tap, a hot shower, toilet, rustic camp kitchen, wood stove, gas bbq, level sites and campfire when permitted. We have many walking and bike trails through the 150 acres of forest and pasture accessible to campers. We have a combination of native eucalypt forest and plantation, and we grow hay and our own beef. It is a private timber reserve and a working forest farm. Semaphore Farm is a 400-acre property with convict history, bordering the Port Arthur historic site.
